1. What is the purpose of this chapter?

To move past the ideas of students as digital natives.

2. What is the major finding from a review of studies that have looked at technology adoption of young people? Does this finding seem to reflect your own use of technology?

"Young people use technology, what technologies and technology-based tools young people are using and the extent to which they are using them." I do use technology a lot. I use it for personal enjoyment such as video games and watching movies, I use technology for school and at work. So yes this does reflect on me.

3. How do the authors define Information Literacy?

 Information Literacy is "the digital (and non-digital) strategies university students use to locate and access information and resources for their studies."

4. What is the "clear message" from a review of the studies focused on college student’s information seeking behavior? Do these findings reflect your own information seeking behaviors?

The clear message is that "all that is required is a computer, Internet access, and for access to sanctioned scholarly content, the necessary authentication." Yes I will use the internet to find anything even if I already know the answer I will still use it to check my answers. I use it all the time for school.

5. What does the term "satisficing" in the area of decision making mean?

The social scientist Herbert Simon is attributed with coining the term 'satisficing' in the area of decision-making to describe the decisions individuals take that are satisfactory but are not 'maximal' or optimal.

6. What are the differences to deep and surface level approaches to a learning task?

Students who adopted a 'deep' approach to the learning task were inclined to focus on trying to comprehend the meaning behind learning material. Students who adopted a 'surface' approach to the learning task tended to focus on simply reproducing what was contained within the learning material with little concern for understanding the overall meaning.

7. What should educators aim to do to improve the scripts student have for sophisticated online information seeking?

Make it interesting and aim to make them do better research.

8. Why is Google's page rank system problematic for information seeking?

They go by popularity and pay outs and not accuracy and unbiased.

9. Are you "digitally wise" when it comes to information seeking? Give an example of how you approached an information seeking task for one of your academic courses this semester (do not include this class).

I think I am digitally wise. I had to find online sources for a paper I am writing in my English class.

10. Has the popularity of the Internet and the information contained on the Web created a new problem for undergraduate student’s research skills? Why of Why not?

I believe it has because when you use to do research there was probably only one book and that made it easier. Now you can find information anywhere on the internet and each page says something different and then you will have to do more research to find if the website you are on has any credibility or not.

1. What is the purpose of this chapter?

The purpose is to understand Digital Literacy even more by looking at how people relate to it.  It also looks at how a child's education can be enhancing their digital literacy.

2. Why did the author choose to focus on your people in the Nordic countries?

Technology is becoming advanced in these countries and digital Literacy important

3. How does education differ in Nordic countries from education in other parts of the world including the United States.

 Testing is emphasized much less in Nordic countries than in America. Projects and more equal opportunity school work is emphasized much more.

4. Why is more research  needed about how young people use digital media in their lives outside of school?

More research is needed to see how varying degrees and types of media use affect the broader 

social and cultural lives of young people.

1. Why is it important for there to be more opportunities for young people to use Digital Media in school?

It engages children.  It improves basic skills and allows children to do basic tasks much simpler.  Today we rely on technology so much that it's important for children to understand that.

2. What skills do people need in order to be considered digitally literate?

They need basic skills to understand how to use the tools they are given, how to apply the things 

that they learn, and when it is appropriate to do certain things and put to use the knowledge they 

possess.

Ten Personal Solutions to Global Warming

This just states ten things you can do to help stop global warming and every person that does it, is helping to prevent global warming and creating a healthier environment.

1. Why do educators need to be careful about  terms like "Digital Native"? A majority of the students may possess a core set of technology-based skills but they are in a very diverse range of skills and skill levels that exist across the student population

2. What outcome occurs when young people are encourage to transform their understanding of particular topics by designing a multimodal text? Positive and enhanced outcomes have been reported

3. You may skip the section titled "Context for the Project".

4. What was the goal of the project in terms of product? It was to track the development of the participants' multimodal literacies over a two-year period by comparing tow multimodal products created at the beginning and end of the period.

5. What was the goal of the project in terms of process? It was to gain a deeper understanding oh how multimodal texts were created, especially when the students were working in pairs at the computer.

6. How were the participants from the study selected? They were students who had worked collaboratively in pairs, who fully completed the task, and the video recordings were intact and complete.

7.  Describe the task students engage is for the purpose of this study? They were to complete a concept map to organize information acquired from web sources and a decision making matrix to facilitate transformation of the ideas in their concept map ino a preferred solution, as required for their multimodal text. Then following these preparatory stages, the students could create a multimodal text using a word processor, a presentation tool, or a web publishing program.

8. Explain how the researchers compared the student created multimodal texts? They evaluated the title slide/page, the headings, and the knowledge representation of each multimodal text in terms of design, content, and cohesion.

9. What differences in Jenny's PowerPoint presentation do you find the most interesting? I find that her color scheme changes is very interesting especially for a kid because I would of thought that a student old would use the same colors as 2 years ago.

10. How is working together on a computer unlike working together using a pencil and paper? 1. While typed words may appear immediately on scree, there is ofter a considerable wait time between the keying in of the instruction and a response from the computer. 2. The length of the wait time in unpredictable and may be several minutes. 3. The result the computer provides to an instruction is often unexpected, as in the selection and the ordering of items located in a web search.

11. What was interesting about student's behavior as they collaborated on a task at the computer? The students would start talking while waiting on the computer and they would talk about the task or something unrelated but the computer would eventually signal by the completion of a response to a command which would bring them back to the task at hand,

12. What can teacher learn about designing learning activities that involve the creation of multimodal texts from this study? That they need to teach traditional skills, time management skills and  maintaining a task.

13. According the the conclusion of this study, what do student need to learn in order to successful complete a multimodal text construction? Students need to learn more traditional skills, time management skills and  maintaining a task.

14. Are you surprised by the conclusions drawn in this study? Yes

1. Why are networks better than hierarchies? Information moves faster in networks because in hierarchies it has to move all the way to the top and the networks adapt to change faster.

2. What is a nation state and how is it being threatened? The nation state is a territorial concept defined by a geographical border. What is happening now is the two big forces will yank the economic system and the environmental system increasingly outside national borders.

3. How is civil society gaining legitimacy over government agencies? Give an example of a NGO (Non-Government Agency) whose goals and services you think are beneficial to solving a global problem. It's increasingly deft use of new technologies.

4. How can business be a helpful global enforcer? It's easier for businesses to look ahead and learn of an issue quicker.

5. What can too much economic and social change lead too? It can lead to political backlash, autarchy, and authoritarian forms of control that can destroy liberal values and human freedoms.

6. What Global Issue concerns you the most? Why? The Global Issue that concerns me the most is world hunger because all these countries are in need of food and it is even happening in the United States. All these people have plenty of food but no one can spare a can food item. It is just terrible that no one helps even with all the extra food that they might have. Each person could donate at least one can a month and it would make a huge difference.
